Frame Material

All frames are manufactured from sustainably sourced green oak or Douglas-fir, depending on specification. Green oak is a traditional choice, known for its strength, workability, and long-term durability. Its natural shrinkage over time tightens joints, reinforcing structural integrity.

Douglas-fir is an alternative timber, used where lighter weight or different aesthetics may be preferred or not as important (such as for framing that won’t be visible). Both timbers are responsibly sourced to meet modern sustainability standards, helping you and your clients meet environmental commitments.

Joints

Every frame uses machine-cut mortise and tenon joints, the industry benchmark for oak construction. This traditional jointing method delivers structural accuracy, long-term strength, and a clean fit on site. By cutting joints using precision machinery, we ensure consistent tolerances across every project.

Design Life

Our frames are manufactured to Q-Mark-equivalent standards and designed for a service life of 60+ years when installed with correct detailing, backed up by a 10-year guarantee on frames.

Performance

Oak naturally delivers strong inherent resistance to weather and wear, making it well-suited to exposed UK sites. However, structural performance is not just about the timber, with the final results also dependent on the envelope design, roofing, and cladding choices. We factor Eurocode data (wind loads, elevation, and orientation) into our quotes, helping set performance expectations from the start of the project.

Appearance

Oak offers a premium, timeless aesthetic for your clients.

• Natural Silvering: Over time, oak develops a distinctive silver-grey patina when exposed to the elements, a feature many clients value for its authenticity.
• Treatment Recommendations: For exposed joinery or where a “new oak” look is preferred, light oiling or finishing treatments can be advised to clients. Light cleaning, such as clearing gutters and washing windows, will make up the bulk of maintenance.
• Visual Assurance: Even untreated, oak maintains its strength and character, making it a great low-maintenance choice.

Lead Times and Drawings

We set out precise expectations on both delivery lead times and drawings, so you can sequence jobs, book teams, and order materials without risk of delay.

Standard Garages

Our most common specifications, such as single, double, or standard multi-bay garages, are typically delivered within 6–8 weeks of order confirmation. This timeframe includes manufacturing, quality checks, and scheduling of delivery, giving you a predictable window to coordinate groundwork, subcontractors, and communicate with your clients.

Complex or Bespoke Builds

For larger or more intricate frames, such as garages with upper floors, unusual bay layouts, or complex roofing requirements, additional time may be required. We’ll provide clear, confirmed timelines at the point of order, so you can manage client expectations and plan your build programme effectively.

Drawings for Sign-Off

Every garage project begins with a set of professional drawings, typically issued within 1–2 weeks of your order. These drawings are essential for checking dimensions, finalising details, and securing approvals before manufacture begins. 

Production and Quality Assurance

Once your drawings are approved, the frame moves into production. We aim to complete all builds at least one week before scheduled shipping, giving our team time to run final quality checks. Each frame is inspected for accuracy, finish, and completeness, so what arrives on site is installation-ready every time.

Planning Permission

When advising your clients, it’s important to highlight that many oak-framed garages can fall under Permitted Development rights. This means they may not always require full planning permission, provided the structure meets certain conditions around height, size, and placement on the property.

However, rules can vary depending on:

• Local authority policies
• Conservation area restrictions
• Listed building status
• Proximity to boundaries

Because of these factors, we always recommend discussing new structures with a local planning office before proceeding.

Our team can supply planning drawings at a modest additional cost. If planning permission is granted using our drawings, the cost of the drawings is deducted from the final frame fee.
